What Do We Sleep For?
Conceptual Design | 2023 | Individual Work | Personal Practice
A Spatial Exploration of Sleep, Rest and Productivity
The project begins with an observation from architectural education and practice: many students and designers experience poor sleep, yet often treat it as a condition to manage rather than a state to value. Sleep is increasingly understood as a tool for working more efficiently, rather than an experience with its own meaning.
This utilitarian view creates a contradiction. When people cannot sleep, they become anxious about losing productive time. When they sleep for longer, they may feel guilty or worried about the next day's work. As a result, rest becomes measured, controlled, and judged through the logic of productivity.
What Do We Sleep For? uses space and architecture to question this condition, creating a conceptual spatial journey that encourages visitors to reflect on sleep, the pressure of work, and rest as an experience in itself.
